Inspired District – Herb Lubalin on P Street

It’s a twenty-minute walk down P Street from ripe to Second Story Books. You can feel a Colonial newspaper, read about Lincoln’s death in the headlines, or in my case, stumble across copies of Fact and Avant Garde. The 60s periodicals (along with Eros) were where Herb Lubalin made a name for himself.

avantgarde

Reading about design history is great, but interacting with the original pieces is unbeatable. Avant Garde features a screen-printed cover as well as day-glo prints of Marylin Monroe. Fact is all black-and-white, with most articles accompanied by a drawing. Being Lubalin productions, there’s lots of typographic eye candy everywhere.
